The Essential Features Of The Best Hosting Services

January 11, 2012 | Author: | Posted in Domains

We frequently see advertising offering the best hosting service, but what does that really mean? It’s very easy to be blinded by the technology and complex terminology, like unlimited this that and the other, but what do we really need? Naturally, this depends on what we want to do with our website, and what our online presence will be aimed at. For example, if we are going to host a video site at one extreme, then we’ll need large amounts of storage and a good bandwidth capacity to cope with the usage.

On the other hand, if we just have a simple site, or a blog, then we need very little in the way of bandwidth and disk space. In this instance we would subscribe to a really cheap service costing several dollars a month. Let’s discuss the basic requirements for a webmaster wanting to created many sites. First of all, the host package needs to be very easy to navigate, with an intuitive interface, such as C-Panel.

Having become familiar with both C-Panel and Plesk, I can tell you there is no comparison between the two. Present day C-Panel interfaces use 1-click installation of popular systems, such as WordPress, which means you can create your site really fast. Your hosting service should be able to accept html and php, of course, and should give you a guaranteed up-time.

Most host services boast 99.9%, which is pretty good. This brings us on to the subject of communication, which is really important. One day I happened to find one of my main sites was down for around thirty minutes, so I was not too pleased. When contacting the help desk, the host rep didn’t give me a lot of information about why it was off line. I transferred immediately to a company with great customer help – and cheaper too! I also used Godaddy for awhile, as they often have reductions on domain names from time to time, but their ftp-like access panel and overall hosting usability is over complex and cumbersome. However, it’s very good for purchasing domain names – simply buy the domain name, change the server names and two hours later you’ll be up and running from your current host provider. I frequently by .info names and use these for making niche sites. For two dollars a shot, it makes perfect sense. In my experience, where Google is concerned, the use of .com, .net, .org or .info makes absolutely no difference at all for the search position. It’s best to buy from Godaddy but host somewhere else.

If you think you’ll be making many sites, then you want a host provider that offers unlimited add on domains. After creating your main domain name, you simply create individual folders for new domains, set the servers for your freshly bought domain names, and you can have hundreds of sites or blogs on one server for a few dollars a month. Nonetheless, maybe it’s a good strategy to separate them a little. I currently 70 sites with one provider, 60 more with a second, and yet more elsewhere – it pays to be careful.
